RE: BOOK ENDORSEMENT
FROM: Benjamin s. Carson, Sr, M.D.
Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery
Professor of Neurological Surgery
Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Pediatrics

"In Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes, Sylvia Morgan Baker has captured the essence of being a friend in the time of trouble. The diagnosis of cancer frequently turns a person's world upside down and provides many new perspectives. It is a time that can be characterized by loneliness and desperation. This book provides a very sympathetic view for individuals who find themselves in this unfortunate situation. It can actually make you laugh and gives you very different perspectives as you begin to understand that there is a great deal more to living than just dealing with the problem of cancer in your own life. I hope that many individuals will keep this as their pocket companion as they move on to maximize the potential that God has placed in their lives."

INTERVIEW March/April Edition
MAMM Magazine: Women, Cancer, and Community

EMERGING LIGHT
You say, "What does hope look like?" It looks like the dawn. Because with the dawn you have expectation, emerging light. There will always be something better coming, regardless of how bad your current situation is. You just might need to wait for it.

Hope looks like a person, somebody who looks at me with empathy, or asks how I am. Hope is somebody who says, "You're going to be great; you're going to be fine." Hope may be a doctor who says, "you're a pleasant patient."

YORK - Sylvia Morgan Baker, author of "Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes", spoke at a recent Breast Cancer Support Group meeting at the Ellis Conference Room in the Heart and Health Wing at the rear of York Hospital. Baker discussed how she learned of "the key to victorious living amidst a monster storm". Diagnosed at age 45, she said, "I've had to face my fears, make tough decisions, knowing I'd have to live with them". Baker cited faith, music, quotes such as one from Epictetus - "Men are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of things." - friends and their prayers encouraged her to resort to her own research, regain her humor and "fight back the cancer".
Frustrated and frightened, feeling futility's quicksand all about, one day she realized it was up to her to decide to focus on the bad - or the good. She has paraphrased Ecclesiastes 3, "A time to break down and cry; and a time to laugh, when your wig falls off in the wind."
Baker holds a Master's degree in education administration, a lifetime Professional Elementary Principal Certificate from the Association of Christian Schools International and has served as elementary principal and dean of curriculum development of a private K-12 school.
Her talk also focused on "eating my way to health." The famed Dr. Chris Wright, of Cambridge University contributed five pages to her book, "Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes". Among many endorsements is one from Dr. Ben Carson, Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon, famed for his success in conjoined twin surgery, who said he believes her message is for everyone.
While she's been honored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council for her guidance among today's youth, grateful responses from readers and listeners stand as one example of the purposes that may be intended when one goes through unexpected harrowing experiences.

SURVIVNG THE MONSTER STORM – October 21, 2004

From: THE CATHOLIC HERALD
By: Christopher Gaul

A year after her recovery from breast cancer, after the harrowing, sometimes soul-crushing experiences of enduring most of the available treatments that culminated in an unexpected double mastectomy, Sylvia Morgan Baker decided she wanted to do something to help other patients and their loved ones fight the grim battle.

As she and her husband, Dan, vacationed at Deep Creek Lake in the summer of 2002, the Bel Air resident recalled her thinking process during those difficult times: that learning to "harness our faith with God's thoughts is the key to victorious living amidst a monster storm".

So she decided to write a book about her own monster storm, a guide that could help others who might find themselves in her situation get closer to God within the experience, from diagnosis to recovery.

She would call it "Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes", a chronicle of her personal experiences with breast cancer; what she thought and how she fought, coupled with advice, practical and spiritual, and encouragement. She also sought and found compelling, hopeful contributions from breast cancer experts; physicians, nurses, counselors, a naturopathic doctor, and even a massage therapist.

In her book, she introduces herself to breast cancer patients by telling them they are just like her. "You and I have in common the unsettling feeling of our worlds shaken up, our schedules not in our own control, and the keen awareness of our own human vulnerability," she said. "When cancer strikes, it puts us all on even ground. Rich or poor, pretty or plain, waitress or CEO, it makes no difference. There is no escape route and the only special treatment we'll get is what is sent from heaven."

Mrs. Baker is 48 years old, attractive, vivacious and in possession of a sharp wit. She and her husband have two children, Karissa 23, and Daniel, 21. Life for the Baker family was good, very good, until Mrs. Baker got "the phone call", the one from her doctor wit the dreaded C-word.

"Nothing shatters your nerves and numbs your mind like the horrible news that you are suffering from a potentially fatal illness", she said. "The mysterious truth of facing your own mortality, suddengly unmasked, feels much like sinking in quicksand with a cement truck headed toward you at the same time."

But she was able to get a grip on herself, turn to God for comfort and a few days later awoke to discover that neither the quicksand nor the truck had killed her yet.

Through some God-given enlightenment, "it dawned on me that while the news of having cancer would require a sober, proactive response, the old news of God's faithfulness was still true", she said.

It was a realization she clung to throughout her ordeal and one that guided her in the preparation and writing of her book.

As Mrs. Baker put it, "Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes", published by Silas Publishing of Atlanta, GA, "shows breast cancer patients and their loved ones how to embrace God's wonderful, affirming thoughts in the midst of a life-threatening challenge."

The book is charmingly illustrated and, while dealing with a serious subject, contains much of Mrs. Baker's contagious humor, interspersed with faith thoughts, prayers, Scripture, and poetry.

As well as the tips from breast cancer experts of various disciplines there is even a collection of recipes that, as the author said, enabled her to eat her way through chemotherapy.

Breast Cancer Be-Attitudes can be found featured in the September-October issue of Advent Christian Witness magazine. The 2-page article features an interview with the author, wherein she states her goal for the book.

Sylvia: "I hope this book will encourage women to treat their cancer right away. I hope it lets them know that they are not alone and that when we turn our thoughts towards God, he always lifts us up. The book will also be meaningful as a resource for practical information."
